I kind of liked the way this was a biography, but then again it wasn't. It told a lot about Walker Evans and his life, but the book is just as much about his contemporaries. Including the people and works that influenced him leads to a much better insight into his professional development. Interestingly, the photographs included here, provide an excellent documentary of the times in which he lived, simply through the fact that so many different photographers are featured. The reproduction of the images is quite good. I've had the good fortune to be able to inspect several Evans prints up close and personal. He was an excellent printer and extracted the most from his negatives. The printers did a very good job of retaining fidelity to the prints as i remember them.Normally, when i get a book of photographs, it is so I can look at the photographs. I may peruse the accompanying text, but only twice in my life have I ever read every page from beginning to end. The first time was with Ansel Adams "The Making of 40 Photographs" and the second time was this book. I really can't recommend this book highly enough to those with an interest in documentary photography.
